B1 Cell Biology Flashcards
(36 cards)
Name a part of the microscope.
Stage, eyepiece, coarse tuner, fine tuner, lens
What is the independent variable in the osmosis practical?
Independent variable – concentration.
What is the dependent variable in the osmosis practical?
Dependent variable – change in mass.
What is the control variable in the osmosis practical?
Control variable – volume of solution, temperature, time,
surface area of the potato.
What is the result of the osmosis?
The potato in the sugar solution will lose water, and so will have
less mass at the end; the potato in the pure water solution will
gain water.
Function of a sperm cell
To get the male
DNA to the
female DNA.
Sperm cell adaptation
Streamlined head, long
tail, lots of mitochondria to
provide energy.
Nerve cells function
To send electrical
impulses around
The body.
Nerve cells adaptation
Long to cover more distance.
Has branched connections to
connect in a network.
Equation for image size
Image size = actual size x magnification
Name the parts of a plant cell that are not in an animal cell
chloroplast, permanent vacuole, cell wall
What do bacterial cells have instead of a nucleus?
They have a single strand of DNA
How many pairs of chromosomes do we have?
23
Where does gas exchange take place?
The alveoli are where gas exchange takes place.
Adaptations of gas exchange
They have a large surface area, a moist lining, thin walls and a
good blood supply.
Uses of stem cells
Uses of stem cells:
* Replacing faulty blood cells;
* making insulin-producing cells;
* making nerve cells.
What are villi?
Millions of villi line the small intestine, increasing the surface area
area to absorb more digested food.
They are a single layer of cells with a good blood supply.
Define diffusion
Diffusion is the spreading out of
particles from an area of higher
concentration in an area of lower
concentration.
Are cell membranes semi-permeable, and what does that mean?
Cell membranes are semi-permeable,
only small molecules
can get through.
What is Osmosis?
Osmosis is the movement of water
molecules across a partially
permeable membrane from a region
of higher concentration to a region
of lower concentration.
What is active transport?
Active transport is the movement
of substances against the concentration
gradient. This process requires
energy from respiration.
Name the part of the cell where
protein synthesis occurs
Ribosomes
Name the part of the cell where
DNA is found
Nucleus
Name the part of the cell where
aerobic respiration takes place
Mitochondria
