B1.1 Carbohydrates and Lipids Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is the definition of a carbohydrate?
Organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in a 1:2:1 ratio.
What is the function of a carbohydrate?
Main source of energy and used for structural support in cells.
What are the three types of carbohydrates called?
Monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides.
What is the definition of a monosaccharide?
A simple sugar, the smallest carbohydrate unit
What are three examples of monosaccharides?
Glucose, fructose, galactose
What is glucose?
Main energy source
Where is fructose found?
In fruit
What is galactose?
Part of the lactose (milk sugar)
What is the definition of a disaccharide?
Two sugars, formed when two monosaccharides bond together.
What are some examples of disaccharides?
Maltose, sucrose, lactose
What is maltose?
Glucose + Glucose
What is sucrose?
Glucose + Fructose
What is lactose?
Glucose + Galactose
What is the definition of a polysaccharide?
Large carbohydrate molecules made of many monosaccharides.
What are some examples of polysaccharides?
Starch, glycogen, cellulose
What is starch responsible for?
Energy storage in plants
What is glycogen responsible for?
Energy storage in animals (liver and muscles)
What is cellulose?
Structural component of plant cell walls
What is the definition of a lipid?
Organic molecules made mostly of carbon and hydrogen, with some oxygen
What is the function of a lipid?
Long-term energy storage, insulation, and cell membrane structure
What are the three types of lipids?
Triglycerides, phospholipids, steroids
What are triglycerides?
Fats & oils
What is the structure of a triglyceride?
1 glycerol + 3 fatty acids
What is the function of a triglyceride?
Energy storage
