What is mechanical digestion ? Where does it occur in digestion?

A

To physical breaking down of food
Occurs in the mouth and stomach
In the mouth (teeth) and stomach (churning through muscle contraction)

What are the stages of digestions just say brief things ?

A

First it’s chewed in the mouth and salaried glands release saliva
Down the gullet
Passes into stomach which does it’s thing
Pushed out into small intestine where it mixes with pancreatic juices and bile from gall bladder
Absorbed from small intestine into blood stream
Left over material moves into the large intestine then poo out

What is important about the stomach ?

A

Contracts muscular walls
Produces pepsin which breaks down proteins
Produces hydrologic acid which kills bacteria

What happens in the small intestine

A

Food absorbed into the bloodstream
Produces enzymes to aid digestion ( made by pancreas)
Also has villi which increase surface area for absorbing food
Single layer of surface cells so short diffusion distance

What does the gall bladder do ?

A

Releases bile which neutralises the acid making the Ph more ideal
And emulsifys fats

A
