what is a communicable disease?
a disease that can be passed from one organism to another
what are the three ways communicable diseases can be passed on?
direct contact, water or air
what is an antigen?
proteins found on pathogens
how does the skin defend the body from pathogens?
- acts as a physical, waterproof barrier
- scabs made from platelets
- glands produce antimicrobial secretions to kill pathogens
how does the stomach defend the body from pathogens?
stomach acid kills most pathogens taken in by food or drink
how does the nose defend the body from pathogens?
nasal hairs and sticky mucus prevent pathogens entering through the nostrils
how do the trachea and bronchi defend the body from pathogens?
lined with mucus to trap pathogens
cilia (hair like structures) waft to move the mucus up the throat to be swallowed
