B4 Flashcards
Where does photosynthesis take place?
In chloroplasts in the leaves of plants
What type of reaction is photosynthesis?
Endothermic so requires energy
Photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide + water ————glucose + oxygen
What type of energy is used for photosynthesis?
Light energy
What is the chemical formula for glucose?
C6 H12 O6
What is glucose used for?
- respiration(energy)
- making cellulose for strong cell walls
- making amino acids used to synthesis proteins
- stored as oils and fats
- stored as starch
Limiting factors of photosynthesis
- carbon dioxide concentration
- light intensity
- chlorophyll concentration
- temperature
What do farmers use to produce a lager yield?
They use greenhouses to increase the rate of photosynthesis.
To further increase this they may add extra CO2 and in the winter add more light and heat to the greenhouse.
Although this process can be expensive
What type of reaction is respiration?
Exothermic as it releases energy
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + oxygen ——– carbon dioxide + water
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in muscle cells?
Glucose ———lactic acid
Why does anaerobic respiration take place?
When there isn’t enough oxygen
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plants/yeast cells?
Glucose ——– ethanol + carbon dioxide
This reaction in yeast cells is called fermentation and is used to make alcoholic drinks and bread.
Metabolism is______
All of the chemical reactions in an organism
Anaerobic respiration leads to oxygen debt… what is oxygen debt?
The amount of extra oxygen the body needs after exercise to deal with lactic acid build up
