B4- Bioenergetics Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide+water -> glucose+oxygen
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose+oxygen -> carbon dioxide+water
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscle cells?
Glucose -> lactic acid
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast cells?
Glucose -> ethanol+carbon dioxide
How is bread-making and wine-making linked with fermentation of yeast?
Bread- carbon dioxide from fermentation makes bread rise
Wine- fermentation process produces alcohol
Why do we respire more during exercise?
Breathing rate increases to get more oxygen into the blood, and your heart rate increases to get this oxygenated blood around the body faster. This removes CO2 more quickly at the same time.
When do we start respiring anaerobically?
During vigorous exercise when the body can’t supply enough oxygen to the muscles quickly enough
What is an oxygen debt?
The amount of extra oxygen, your body needs to react with the buildup of lactic acid and remove it from the cells. Oxygen reacts with the lactic acid form harmless CO2 and water.
What are two ways the body copes with the high level of lactic acid?
The pulse and breathing rate stay high
The blood that enters the muscles transports the lactic acid to the liver. It is then converted back to glucose
