B4 The Heart & Circulatory System Flashcards
(8 cards)
Right Atrium, Right Ventricle
Right Atrium- receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it to the right ventricle
Right Ventricle- Right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
Left atrium and Left Ventricle
Left atrium- left side pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
Left ventricle- blood flows in on direction- valves stop it.
Double Circulatory System
.first circuit: heart - lungs - Heart
Second circuit : Heart - Body - Heart
Arteries
Function: carry blood to the heart
Structure: thick walls, small lumen, high pressure
Veins function : carry blood to the heart
Structure! Thinner walls, large lumen, valves to stop backflow
Capillaries Function
Function: where exchange of gases/ nutrients happens
Structure: very thin walls (1 cell thick) , tiny
Breathing System
Nose/Mouth- air enters
Trachea (windpipe) - carries air to lungs
Bronchi- Trachea splits into two tubes ons to each lung
Bronchioles- Smaller branches inside lungs
Alveoli- Tiny air sees where gad exchange happens
Diaphragm- Muscle under lungs that helps breathing
Gas Exchange (Alveoli)
.large Surface area
.Thin walls
.Good blood supply
