B5 Flashcards
(28 cards)
How can we keep in good hygiene and prevent infection spreading
Washing your hands
after coming into contact with chemicals, raw meat, bodily
fluids, machinery or dirty surfaces.
How can we isolate infected individuals and prevent infection spreading
If someone has an infectious disease, especially a serious
disease such as Ebola or cholera, they need to be kept in
isolation. The less people that come into contact with them
mean the pathogens will not be spread
How can we prevent infection spreading
For example, mosquitoes carry a range of diseases. If the vectors
are destroyed or controlled, the disease may stoped or
reduced being spread
How does a vaccination protect us from infection
During a vaccination doctors introduce a small amount of a
harmless pathogen. This means if you come into contact with
the disease you will be immune to it. Vaccination is a very
successful way of preventing diseases.
What diseases is usually spread through mosquitos
Malaria
What disease is the result of plants lossing there leaves prematurely
Rose black spot
What disease is spread in unhygienic kitchens
Salmonella
What std is transmitted through the discharge
gonorrhoea
What disease is spread through throat mucus
Mesals
What organisms do viruses cause disease in
Every living organism
Who developed the importance of vaccines
Louis pasture
Who started using antiseptic to clear chemicals and pathogens
Joesph lister
What type of bacteria is HIV cause by
Virus
What are the initial symptoms of HIV
Flu like illness
What are the symptoms of TMV
Discolouration of leaves
What type of bacteria is salmonella caused by
Fungus
What type of bacteria is gonorrhoea caused by
Bacterium
What type of bacteria is rose black spot caused by
Fungus
What are the symptoms of rose black spot
Purple or black spots on the leaves
How do white blood cells eliminate the threat of pathogens
They engulf them. Destroying and making it impossible for that pathogen to infect you
How do pathogens infect our cells
They attach to the cell walls and then infect the cells that they are attached to
How do white blood cells stop pathogens attaching to cells
They release antibodies that attach to where the pathogens would attach to the healthy cells therefore not allowing them to attach. This also stops this type of pathogen dealing damage again
How do white blood cells react to the toxins produced by pathogens
They release antitoxins that counteract the toxins
This however does not eliminate the threat or destroy the pathogen
Which scientist is credited with developing vaccines
Louis pastour
