B5-Homeostasis and response Flashcards
(21 cards)
Homeostasis
the regulation of the bodies internal conditions to maintain stability and balance
Normal body temperature
37 degrees celcius
Body temperature increases
CNS signals dermal blood vessels to dialate and sweat gland to secrete, body heat is lost to the surroundings
Body temperature decreases
CNS signals dermal blood vessels to constrict and sweat glands ot remain inactive, muscles contract involunartily (shivering)
Peripheral nervous system
The part of the nervous system consisting mainly of nerves outside of the central nervous system
What is a synapse?
The gap where the ends of two neurones meet
The nervous pathway
Stimulus - receptor - sensory neuron - CNS - motor neuron - effector - response
What are the three toes of neuron?
Sensory
Relay
Motor
What are the four hormones involved with the menstrual cycle?
FSH
Oestrogen
LH
Progesterone
Where is FSH produced?
The pituitary gland
Where is oestrogen produced?
The ovaries
Where is LH produced?
The pituitary gland
Where is progesterone produced?
The ovaries
What is the role of FSH?
Causes an egg to mature in one of the ovaries
What is the role of oestrogen?
Causes the lining of the uterus to build up and thicken
What is the role of progesterone?
Maintains the uterus lining
What is the role of LH?
Causes ovulation
How does FSH interact with other hormones?
Stimulates the production of oestrogen
How does oestrogen interact with other hormones?
Stimulates the production of LH
Inhibits the production of FSH
How does LH interact with other hormones?
Indirectly stimulates the production of progesterone
How does progesterone interact with other hormones?
Inhibits the production of LH
