Bandura 1963 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Aim
To see if exposure to a live model would encourage aggressive behaviour
Sample
- 48 boys and 48 girls aged 35-69 months
- 2 adult role models - 1 male and 1 female
What were the groups that the sample was split into?
Group 1 - real life aggressive model
Group 2 - film of aggressive model
Group 3 - cartoon aggressive model
Group 4 - control group
What happened in stage 1?
Group 1 - ppts taken to a room where they watched a model be aggressive to a Bobo doll
Group 2 - 10 min movie played - aggressive model same as group 1
Group 3 - 10 min film of a woman dressed as a cartoon cat - same aggressive behaviours portrayed
What happened in stage 2?
Children taken to a room where they played with toys, but they were then taken away from them
What happened in stage 3?
Ppts spent 20 mins in experimental room with a range of toys
Results
- boys were more aggressive in every condition
- observing a live model did not have a significant impact on aggression as B originally predicted
Strengths
Inter-rater reliability - 2 observers observed the children and agreed on their scoring
Reliability - standardised procedure and controlled conditions
Weaknesses
Ecological validity - artificial environment- demand characteristics may have been involved
Generalisability - specific sample - may not apply to all children
