Baptism Flashcards
(12 cards)
What does Augustine say about infant baptism
“Tradition from the apostles” He believed that infants, who are not able to imitate christ, are “ingrafted” into his body via baptism.
It causes a real objective change in reality, and without it, hell is inevitable
What New testament sources support infant baptism
Luke 18:15-16-“let the little children come to me”
John 3:5-“No one can enter the kingdom of god without being bornn of water and spirit”
Mathew 28”make disciples of all nations”
The apostles baptised whole households in corinthians
How did Zwingli differ from the traditional view of baptism
He saw it as a “sign and seal” rather than something that affected regeneration-quotes abrahams circumcision as being a “seal of righteousness” rather than actually doing anything.
Sign of belonging to the covenenan, and helps foster community.
What are the pros of believers baptism
The N.T. has no case of infants being baptised
Jesus himself was baptised as an adult
Baptism is an expression of faith; children presumably cannot express this
Who were the first to advocate for believers baptism
The Anabaptists during the reformation
Why were anabaptists persecuted
They baptised people who were baptised as infants because they thought it didnt count. Seen as re-baptism which is bad by both catholics and protestants
What does Karl Barth say about Baptism
Baptism does not bring about salvation, but is a symbolic testament to salvation through christ
What was Barths step by step argument for Baptism’s nature
Baptism marks the first step in a life of christ
It is a response to baptism in the spirit
It is not a sacrament but a human action acknowledging the true sacrament; a life in christ
It ‘seals’ the reality of Gods grace, but does not generate it(as augustine may claim)
Why does barth think infant baptism is bad
It is the first step of a life in obedience to god so it cannot be done via coercion
Infant baptism is coercive- although true, valid and effectual, it is deficient in the subjective sense because no consent
Refers to it as ‘clouded baptism’-important
Who supported Barths view
Jurgen Moltmann
What does Oscar Cullman say about baptism
that it is a passive acceptance of gods grace/work, and so does not require consent/active participation
