What is the first step of infant baptism and what happens
The welcome, this starts at the door, the priest welcomes the parents and godparents and reminds them of their role in bringing up the child in the Roman Catholic Church. The sign of the cross is made on the baby’s forehead as a symbol that they belong to God and to the Church.
What is the second step of infant baptism and what happens
Bible readings and sermon, passages from the bible are read by the priest and participants to symbolise the word of god, the priest then delivers a sermon about the message of christian baptism
What is the third step of infant baptism and what happens
Exorcism and anointing, Priest anoints the baby with the oil of catechumens as sign of strength, this oil should sustain them in challenging times.
What is the fourth step of infant baptism and what happens
Baptismal promises, the water in the baptismal font is blessed, parents and godparents show their faith and make promises, on behalf of the baby, they answer questions by the priest and show their belief in the catholic church
What is the fifth step of infant baptism and what happens
Baptism, the water in the font is poured on the baby’s head 3 times, the baby has now entered the life of Jesus, this is when the baby’s name is used
What is the sixth step of infant baptism and what happens
Anointing with chrism, baby is anointed with oil of chrism, to show they have been chosen by god the be a member of the Catholic Church
What is the seventh step of infant baptism and what happens
White garment and baptismal candle, a white shawl is wrapped around the baby, and the baptismal candle is lit from the paschal candle.
What is the eighth and last step of infant baptism and what happens
The Lord’s Prayer and final blessing, everyone says the our father together, the baby is now a member of the church and the priest blesses everyone and asks god for help bringing up the Child in the Catholic Church.
