barriers for minor parties Flashcards
(6 cards)
media barrier
most print press support major parities such as conservatives (sun, daily mail and telegraph) and labour (daily mirror/ guardian)
media not a barrier
traditional media no longer important as recently newspapers tend to back winners e.g. the sun in 1997 said “ it must be him” referring to blair but in 2010 they switched to favouring conservatives. 1.3 million lib dems spent on advertising for things like face book and only received 11 seats.
FPTP barrier
not proportional. in 2024 election reform uk recievd 14.3% of vote share and only 5 seats whereas lib dems received 12.2% and got 72 seats. Similar thing happened to UKIP in 2015 when they had around 4 million votes and only 5 seats.
FPTP not barrier
its not lack of proportionality thats the problem but rather lack of popularity. FPTP doesnt hinder them in scotland they get more seats as many in scotland support their policy e.g. in 2019 SNP they only have 3.9% of the votes but have 48 seats.
funding barrier
labour have trade union support for funding, conservatives have businesses therefore they are at an advantage as they an campaign more in 2019 election SNP only £24000 in donation whereas conservatives had £19 million.
