What is locale?
Where activities take place. Social interactions, attitudes and behaviours.
What is meant by ‘sense of place’?
Subjective and emotional attachment to a place
What is a space?
A place with no meaning
What is placelessness?
Lack of uniqueness. E.g. Airports.
What causes placelessness?
When global powers > local powers.
Development of TNCs in places
What is a near place?
Places feeling like home. Form our national identity as a country. Feeling of security.
May just be geographically close
What is a far place?
Foreign places. Recognise a division between them and us. Racism may develop.
May just be geographically close
What is an experienced place?
Places we’ve visited, developing our own perspective. May have topophilia
What is topophilia?
Like of a place
What is topophobia?
Dislike of a place
What is a media place?
Makes the world seem smaller. May contrast other representations. May be through music, social media, news, poems, etc
What is meant by ‘genius loci’?
Develop a sense of place by learning the spirit of it
(linked to experienced place)
What is an insider?
People who feel like they belong in a place. Can be linked to place of birth, citizenship, language capability and individual state of mind
What are endogenous factors?
Internal factors that help shape place character. Can be human or physical
What are exogenous factors?
External factors shaping a place character. Generally the relations with another place
What are some examples of endogenous factors? (8)

physical geography (e.g. valley or river)
Infrastructure
built environment
location
economic character
land use
demographic structure
What are some examples of exogenous factors? (4)
People/migration
resources (import or export - relations)
Money + investment

What is place identity?
The meaning and significance of a place to the people who live there and its users.
How people experience a place and the meanings they give to it (may conflict)
What is agglomeration?
People move from rural to urban areas (better paid jobs + quality of life)
What is suburbanisation?
Urban sprawl causes city growth, so people move outwards from the city
What is counter-urbanisation?
Movement from large cities to smaller villages and commute to the city
What is regeneration?
Redevelopment of urban areas that have become run down
What are clone towns?
Places/towns losing their individual identity. High streets and shopping centres, having many TNCs.
E.g. airports
What is globalisation?
Increasing interconnectedness of the world’s economic, cultural and political systems. It has increased the production of goods and services as well as TNCs and FDIs
