Basic Systems Flashcards
(36 cards)
What is a system
Systems are interconnecting pipes and components that will deliver a substance from one point to another
Name the two main systems
Open loop and closed loop system
What is an open loop system
The working fluid is consumed such as fuel, domestic fresh water
What is a closed loop system
The working fluid is reused such as Lub Oil system and fresh water cooling system
Name the different tanks available
Headed tank, Service tank and Drain tank
What is a header tank
Reservoir to top up a system
What is a service tank
Supply of clean, water free fuel
What is a drain tank
Collects oil returning from a system
Name the 3 different gauges available
Contents gauge , Gauge glass and Sounding tube
What do the different gauges do?
Contents gauge - clock/dial and measures how much fluid is in a tank
Gauge glass - Visual indication to tank level and you can press a button to read
Sounding tube- used to measure depth of liquid in a tank- dip tape
What is a strainer?
Remove large, coarse particles
What type of pipework is used depending on what ?
Service being supplied , fluid
Temperatures and pressures
Other types of material used in a system
What materials are used in pipework ?
Phosphor bronze- high pressure salt water Copper- domestic fresh water Copper Nickel- lub oil Brass- castings Plastic- sewage and pre wet
Name the types of seals available and their uses?
Gaskets- non asbestos fibre- paper, leather, cork, copper and rubber
Mechanical Seals- used on rotating components e.g. pump shafts
Keeler Ring Couplings- high pressure salt water
Gland packing- silicone, wool, wax- depends on fluid type, pressure and temp
What is the purpose of a valve?
Provides a method of controlling flow or pressure of a fluid and provides a way of isolating different systems and components
Name the different types of valves
Globe valve, Gate valve, Flap valve, Saunders valve, Ball seated cock, Relief valve, Reducing valve, non-return valve, pressure control valve and remote operation valve
What does a relief valve do?
Prevents over- pressurisation
What does a reducing valve do?
Reduces pressure for part of a system
What does a non-return valve do ?
Prevents reversal flow
What does a pressure control valve do?
Maintains pressure at a set level and monitors the outlet pressure
What is a ROV?
Remote operation valve - rod gearing or automated
Name the two different types of pumps
Positive and dynamic displacement pump
What is the difference between a positive and dynamic displacement pump?
Positive displacement pump has less flow and increases the pressure such as a gear wheel pump and a rotary pump but dynamic displacement pump has a large flow and low pressure such as axial and centrifugal pump.
The faster the flow the pressure decreases and slower the flow is the pressure will increase
What does a motor do?
Converts electrical energy into mechanical motion which drives a pump
