Basics Flashcards
(27 cards)
Normal respiratory rate for dogs
10-40/min (consider size)
Normal respiratory rate for cats
20-40/min
Stridor
Rigid tissue vibrations (larynx, trachea), during inspiration
Stertor
Soft tissue vibrations (soft palate), during inspiration, “snoring”
Increased inspiratory breathing effort (+/- respiratory noise) would indicate
Upper airway disease/obstruction
Increased expiratory breathing effort would indicate
Lower airway disease/obstruction
What is restrictive breathing pattern?
Mixed respiratory pattern –> primary lung disease (parenchymal disease)
What is asynchronous or paradoxical breathing pattern?
Abdomen moves inward during inspiration –> pleural disease
Prolonged capillary refill time could indicate
dehydration, hypovolemia, shock
Decreased capillary refill time could indicate
early shock, fever, hyperthermia
Normal capillary refill time is
1-2s
Pale or white mucous membranes could indicate
Anemia
Poor perfusion
Vasoconstriction
Cyanotic/blue/purple mucous membranes could indicate
Inadequate oxygenation, hypoxia
Brick red mucous membranes could indicate
Increased perfusion
Vasodilation
due to
Sepsis, early shock, SIRS, fever
Icteric mucous membranes could indicate
Bilirubin accumulation
due to
Hepatic or biliary disease, hemolysis
Brown mucous membranes could indicate
Methemoglobulinemia
due to
intravascular hemolysis
Petechiae on mucous membranes could indicate
Coagulation disorder
due to
Platelet disorder, DIC, coagulation factor deficits
What percentage of dehydration can lead to hypovolemic shock and death?
12%-15%
What could it mean if the jugular vein is overfilled and pulsating during palpation?
Right-sided heart failure
What are the palpable lymph nodes in dogs and cats?
Submandibular
Prescapular
Popliteal
Axillary
Inguinal
Normal heart rate for dogs
60-140/min (consider size)
Normal heart rate for cats
No one knows… but
140-200/min
What is sinus arrhytmia?
HR faster during inspiration and slower during expiration. Normal in dogs, not normal in cats.
Decreased lung sounds dorsally could mean
Pneumothorax (air goes up)
