Key quotes
“Bullets smacking the belly out of the air”
“In bewilderment then he almost stopped”
“King, honour, human dignity, ectetera Dropped like luxuries in a yelling alarm”
Language and structural techniques
Quote 1-The personification of ‘smacking the belly’ shows the severity of war as the soldier keeps on hearing the same noise as he goes across the battle field. Every sound wakes him up.
Quote 2-The Volta goes with the symbolism of ‘bewilderment.’ It suggests he is confused and doesn’t know why he is there. This links to the context of propaganda because war is no longer an idea it is real. It is juxtaposition because his behaviour goes against patriarchy.
Quote 3-This is a list and a simile. The soldier makes the decision to retreat from the fighting. The simile makes the comparison to when you would sacrifise all your luxuries to save yourself so you do not die.
