Lack of rhyme scheme: lack of regularity within soldiers experienced of war, creating atmosphere of discomfort and anguish.

- Hughes wasn’t alive during WW1, however his father was a veteran which may influence his thoughts on war
- grew up in post-war society seeing effects of war
- bayonet charge was from a collection of poems called The Hawk in the rain dedicated to his wife, focusing on animals and their behaviours. rhis animalistic focus is seen with the focus on instinctual behaviours
Hughes was heavily influenced by Owen, where his poem shares many similarities with “Spring offensive”
