“Mind forged manacles”
Semantic field of oppression which is so deep it forms manacles around their minds, confined to a misery that authorities have imprisoned them in. Symbolism of Manacles being made of metal bands intertwined, mimicking people in London are inextricably intertwined with inescapable misery and oppression .

“In every infant’s cry of fear”
Anaphora mimics cyclical and sempiternal torturing the citizens in London are subject to. Oxymoron in “infant” and “fear” juxtaposing images show how innocence of youth has been corrupted and stolen as they have been tainted by this exploitative setting. motif of distress intensifies pessimistic tone.

Quatrains with regular ABAB rhyme scheme where there is no freedom emulates restriction and mass oppression the lower class were subject to.
consistent Iambic tetrameter heightens motif of oppression that permeates poem. Breaking this rhythm in “marks of weakness, marks of woe” deviation implies that unity could offer hope and free London from institutions that oppress people.
