BBBBBB Flashcards
(13 cards)
What does normal breast tissue look like on H&E?
Lobules of glandular tissue (pink), ducts lined by two cell layers, surrounded by adipose (white spaces).
How does breast cancer appear on H&E?
Irregular, infiltrating nests or sheets of cells, loss of normal lobular structure, dense stroma.
What does normal prostate tissue look like on H&E?
Glands with folded lumens, two cell layers (basal + secretory), fibromuscular stroma.
How does prostate cancer appear on H&E?
Small, crowded glands with single cell layer, loss of normal architecture, prominent nucleoli.
What does normal cervical tissue look like on H&E?
Stratified squamous epithelium (ectocervix) or columnar epithelium (endocervix), clear basement membrane.
How does cervical cancer appear on H&E?
Disordered, thickened epithelium, abnormal mitoses, invasion through basement membrane.
What does PAS stain highlight in colon tissue?
Goblet cells filled with magenta mucin; mucinous tumors show excess magenta.
What does Masson’s Trichrome show in stomach?
Blue/green collagen (submucosa), red muscle layers, helps spot fibrosis or tumor stroma.
What does Reticulin stain show in liver?
Black meshwork outlining hepatic plates; loss/disruption in cancer.
What does EVG stain show in lung?
Black elastic fibers outlining alveolar walls; thickened or disrupted in disease.
What is a tissue fold and how does it look?
Overlapping/wrinkled tissue-obscures details; fix by flattening in water bath.
How does overstaining appear?
Tissue is too dark, details are lost; fix by reducing staining time or diluting stain.
How do air bubbles appear on a slide?
Clear, round holes-interrupt tissue; fix by remounting or cleaning slides.
