Behaviorist Approach Flashcards
(16 cards)
Behaviorist approach is
A way of explaining behavior in terms of what is observable and in terms of learning through classical and operant conditioning
Classical conditioning is
Learning through association which establishes behavior
Steps of classical conditioning
UCS=UCR
NS=X
UCS+NS=UCR
Repeated pairing
NS-CS
UCR-CR
CS=CR
Operant conditioning is
Learning through reinforcement which maintains behavior
What are the 3 types of operant conditioning
Positive reinforcement
Negative reinforcement
Punishment
Positive reinforcement
Receiving a reward when certain behaviors are performed
Negative reinforcement
Behavior to avoid negative consequences
Punishment
Unpleasant consequence of behavior
Classical conditioning research
Pavlov’s research
Main assumptions of behaviors
This approach suggests that behavior is learnt from our environment (tabula rasa)
Only focuses on behavioral responses rather than internal processes hence rejecting introspection
Maintain control and objectivity in their lab study research
Reinforcement is
The consequences of a behavior that increases the likelihood of it being repeated
Either positive or negative
Operant conditioning research
Skinners research
Behaviorists approach animal studies issue
-conducted on animal samples
-eg.Skinners rats
-no evidence to suggest we’ll respond the same way since we have different biology/brains
Behaviorists approach real world application
-flooding therapy, prevents the maintenance of phobias through negative reinforcement
-Exhausts fear response
-educate
-treat i
-improve Q of L
-useful theory
Behaviorist approach deterministic
-All behavior is determined by the sum of our conditioning
-Skinner believes everything we do is the sum total of our reinforcement history,
-Ignores the influence of free will
-Negative psychology
Methodological strengths
-Uses objective measurements allowing accurate replications
-Greater scientific credibility and status
