Behaviour change and learning Flashcards
(9 cards)
In what ways can reflex behavior change?
Response becomes more/less vigorous
Eliciting stimulus becomes more/less likely to elicit the response
Response more/less effectively produces an outcome
A stimulus can elicit a new response
What are four reasons reflex behavior can change?
Bodily injury or muscle fatigue
Changes in physical fitness or strength
Internal state or mood
Learning
What distinguishes learning from fatigue?
Learning results from experience and causes relatively permanent behavior change
Fatigue is temporary and wears off quickly
Forgetting from learning is slow
What is reflex habituation?
A learning process that reduces the responsiveness of a reflex due to repeated stimulation
What is the definition of habituation?
Learning not to respond to a repeated stimulus.
What is the Train-Rest-Test protocol used for?
To determine whether reduced response is due to fatigue or habituation.
What are the two outcomes of the Train-Rest-Test protocol?
Vigor restored → No habituation (due to fatigue); this is spontaneous recovery
Vigor not restored → Habituation occurred (due to learning)
What is short-term habituation
A form of learning that lasts less than an hour and can be established in a single session.
What is dishabituation?
Reversal of habituation by presenting a novel/intense stimulus.
It does not reverse fatigue, only habituation.
Confirms the existence of short-term habituation.
