reflex eye movements Flashcards
(10 cards)
Do all reflexes involve the spinal cord?
No – VOR is a reflex without spinal cord involvement.
Are reflexes always simple neuron chains?
No – some, like VOR, involve complex brain circuits.
Are reflexes always repeatable
No – response can vary with context.
Why do we move our eyes?
A:
Keep images stable
Focus images on the fovea
Function of VOR?
Keeps eyes stable when the head moves.
Direction of eye movement?
Opposite to head movement (counter-rotation).
Is VOR slow or fast?
Smooth, slow movement.
What are the 2 types?
Saccades – quick jumps
Smooth – gradual shifts (e.g. VOR)
What is fixation?
Pause between saccades.
Conjugate vs Disconjugate?
Conjugate: both eyes same direction
Disconjugate: eyes move oppositely
