Behaviour Ecology (Week 4) Flashcards
What term refers to an animals behaviour when searching for food?
Optimal foraging.
When do you typically see optical foraging?
During courtship, deception, aggression, cooperation
What are the two competitive social behaviours?
Agnostic behaviour (physical contest) and fighting
Apart from agnostic behaviour and fighting, which are other competitive social behaviours seen in animals?
Threat displays (When a dog snarls, showing teeth) and dominance hierarchies (Who is the alpha male) and territorial (stabilises population densities and stops intruders)
What’s an example of territories used by animals?
A lions territory can be hundreds of KM and a sea lion will secure a space on the beach for a sea lion babe
In courtship, are the males or females the one who chose and why?
The females pick as they find someone to invest in their off-spring with them
In birds, are both parents there to raise their off-spring?
Nope, the male goes out for milk
What two things to female species look for in male species?
Direct benefits to the female (such as a male bringing a fish to the female during a courtship/ prior to a little bit of da sexy time)
Genetics which will benefit the off-spring, all about looking enhanced and juiced up but you’re actually mad natty
Explain what lekking is?
A male gives a display and the female will see who is the most attractive, go over for a little sexy time and be gone.
What term describes animals which are selfish and d what only suits them?
Altruism
What is inclusive fitness?
For fitness and genes, your off-spring and your relatives off-spring, you all help each other with resources, like a family of humans would
What is important to consider in the aid for inclusive fitness (to who gets the aid)?
The relatedness/ genes which they share, like a human family, siblings you are more likely to share with than you cousin who is less related to you than your sibling
What is the term which describes species which separate far from their group?
Kin selection (an example would be human family moving abroad)
