Q

When have you had to work with someone difficult/different?

A

Circumstance-Doing IFR route training with senior pilot who I’d not met was very quiet and difficult to communicate with at first.

Action-I kept communications to a minimum and solely related to the operation. I waited for the pilot to come out of his shell a little. Which he did during the cruise. I allowed him to lead the conversation to a level he seemed happy with throughout the course of the day.

Outcome/Result-Throughout the day, being the one receiving instruction, I remained professional. After a quiet start to the day the training pilot seemed to gradually become more comfortable as did I.

Q

When have you been bored/tedious at work?

A

Circumstance-Whilst working at Air Fraser, our flying movements were largely dictated by the tide/beach conditions. Meaning at times I would experience large periods of time with no flights to do.

Action-I would normally prepare for a busy period of flying that would eventuate at low tide. Cleaning the aircraft etc. If I still found myself bored, I would study something relevant at the time. Actually a large portion of my ATPL self study was done on that beach.

Outcome/Result-I was always able to convert the down times into a productive time. Therefore the feeling of being bored at work was always short lived. There’s always something to be done/learnt!

Q

Tell us when you have been in a stressful situation at work and how did you cope?

A

Circumstance-Food poisoning as PF with inexperienced freshly checked copilot.

Action-discussed situation with copilot. Following, decided to change seats. Rebriefed an alternate approach and missed approach And potential diversion to Brisbane.

Outcome/Result-We carried out a normal landing in poor conditions becoming visual not far above the MDA. I called operations upon arrival and another pilot was flown to relieve me of my duties for the remaining 2 sectors.

Q

When have you had to take control of a situation?

A

Circumstance-ICUS training new recruit on Lady Elliot Island performed a go around from the right seat.

Action-PF was unable to actuate reverse. Stopping distance not sufficient I called go around. PF unable to actuate a go around, I called taking over and managed to free the power lever and conduct a safe go around.

Outcome/Result-A safe go around was conducted. I made the decision to remain in control acting as PF from the right seat and conducted a circuit and normal landing. I debriefed out passengers offering a general explanation as to why we aborted our first landing. I then debriefed my Trainee Pilot and lodged a safety report.

Q

When have you had to change your style of communication.

A

Circumstance-Asian pax on scenic flights moving to open rear exit as before stairs in place.

Action-Initially began bringing English speaking guide to aircraft to brief this immediately prior to pax boarding. Further to this I had the safety briefing video amended to include a statement regarding remaining seated after shutdown until a crew member opens the exit door.

Outcome/Result-Immediate reduction in incidents following additional brief and no reported incidents since video altered.

Q

When have you been the leader of an effective team?

A

Circumstance- Becoming an unofficial ops manager on the beach at Air Fraser.

Action-Leading a team of pilots and ground crew making decisions on appropriate landing strips and flight routes. Managing less experienced pilots in tricky conditions. Ensuring safety and dealing directly with Tour Leaders.

Outcome/Result-Generally positive outcomes. Great safety record. At times loads couldn’t be completed in desired capacity due to short runways and timing. Leased with Tour Leaders to ensure an explanation was given as to certain decisions that were made.
