Behaviourist Approach - Assumption 1: Humans Are Born Like A Blank Slate Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
Behaviours believe we are born a ‘Tabula Rasa’ what does it mean
A
Blank slate
2
Q
Where is behavioural learned from
A
Interactions with environment
3
Q
How do we respond to environmental stimuli and why
A
- because behaviour is learned from interactions
- we don’t think about our behaviour
- therefore we respond passively to environmental stimuli
4
Q
Where do behaviourists sit on the nature/nurture debate
A
- Nurture
—> all behaviour comes from environment
5
Q
Where do behaviourists sit on Determinism verses Free Will debate, and why
A
- Determinism (environmental Determinism)
- its our environment that shapes us
6
Q
What is environmental determinism
A
- our behaviour is determined and shaped by the environment in which we grow
- therefore we have no free will over our behaviour
- because it was shaped by our environment and experience
7
Q
Give an example from psychology
A
- Bandura (1963)
- demonstrates how children learn aggression through external, environemntal factors
- children who were exposed to a non-aggressive role model did not behave aggressively towards the doll
8
Q
Apply to formations of relationships
A
- Mary Ainsworth suggests that child is born as a blank slate and ‘learns’ how to form relationships from the first relationships they have with their primary care-giver
- it acts as an internal model for all future relationships
- if the relationship is secure and characterised by warmth = child will form secure happy relationships moving forwards
- if the relationship is insecure, rejecting and confusing = so will the relationships they form
