5
Q

What are the 5 stages of the sectarian cycle, and explain them?

A

Schism -> when members of a trad church break away & form their own movement
Intensity -> sect’s leader establishes values (often conflict with society)
Denominationalism -> intensity cools over time (especially due to 2nd gen)
Establishment -> sect becomes more accepting of the world
Further schism -> some members who hold original beliefs get frustrated & break away (cycle starts again)

AO2: Who suggested that many educated m class y people in the 60-70s were attracted to world-rejecting NRMs due to the marginalisation they felt from the failure of hippie movements?
Wallis
29
Who suggested that relative deprivation can explain why more m class and advantaged social groups join NRMs?
Stark & Bainbridge
30
What is relative deprivation and how can this explain why more m class advantaged individuals feel attracted to NRMs?
The subjective feeling of being deprived/lacking in something compared to others Can be spiritual/emotional inadequacy (ideas from sect membership/cult following can overcome it)
