Benzos Flashcards
(15 cards)
1
Q
Benzos MOA
A
Benzodiazepines bind to the GABAaα1,2,3β2γ2 area
- results in GABA binding more potently to the receptor
- Increased GABA effect: it must be present as BZDs don’t have intrinsic agonistic activity
2
Q
GABA receptor a1
A
sedative/hypnotic, reinforcing
3
Q
GABA receptor a2 and 3
A
Anxiolytic, anticonvulsant (a2)
4
Q
GABA receptor a5
A
learning and memory
5
Q
GABA receptor b3
A
respiratory drive, hypnotic
6
Q
GABA B receptor
A
Muscle relaxant
7
Q
Z drugs
A
Zolpidem
Eszoplicone
Zaleplon
8
Q
Z Drug MOA
A
Bind to GABA a, alpha 1 subunit
- less broad uses than the Benzos
- Less risk than Benzos
9
Q
Benzodiazepine drugs
A
Triazolam Clonazepam Alprazoplam Lorazepam Diazepam Oxazepam Chloridiazepoxide
10
Q
ADEs of BZDs
A
- Sedation
- Cognitive impairment
- Ataxia/incoordination
- Respiratory depression
- Anterograde Amnesia
- Paradoxical agitation
11
Q
Benefits of BZDs
A
BZDs and Opiates combo:
- Preoperatively: hypnotic and analgesic
- Agitation in the ICU
12
Q
BZDs risk: Misuse
A
- Enhances feelings of euphoria with opiates
- Often used to diminish other drug withdrawal effect
13
Q
Dynamic effect of opiate and BZD
A
- respiratory depression (lowers respiratory drive)
- Pupillary constriction (diazepam and methadone)
14
Q
Signs of rapid withdrawal
A
- Tremors
- Anxiety
- Perceptual disturbances
- Dysphoria
- Psychosis
- Seizures
15
Q
Protracted withdrawal
A
May last for up to a year after drug cessation:
- anxiety
- insomnia
- depression
- weakness
- muscle pain
- tremor
- irritable bowel
