Big Bang and MO Flashcards
How did the Big Bang go ?
- singularity
- quarks and e-
- protons and neutrons
- really hot so only He+, Li+, H+, etc.
- temp dropped
- matter clumped
- fusion: H burning made He
He then burned and
made C
What is the Doppler effect ?
why sounds sound lower pitched as it moves away and high-pitched when closer
- think of an ambulance
What is redshift ?
everything in the universe is moving away from us w/ increasing speed
Does the element undergoing a reaction change ?
NEVER
Difference b/w chemical reactions and nuclear reactions ?
- chemical: involve e-; element NEVER changes
- nuclear: involves nucleus, element DOES change
What is fusion ?
adding 2 nuclei together
What is fission ?
breaking apart 2 nuclei
What is the requirement for fusion ? example ?
- high temp
- ex: stars !!
What is affecting 2 nuclei that are moving toward e/a but are still separated by distances greater than the size of a nucleus ? What is needed ?
- Electrostatic force
- needs kinetic energy
Why not use fusion reactors ?
Takes more energy than it produces
Why is fission a chain reaction ?
As the nucleus splits, it releases n that hit other atoms nearby and induce 3 more fissions, then those 9….etc.
What is critical mass ?
The mass required for the chain reaction to keep happening on its own.
What are the 5 types of radioactivity ?
- alpha particle emission
- beta particle emission
- positron emission
- e- capture
- gamma decay (electromagnetic radiation)
What are nanomaterials vs nanoparticles ?
- nanomaterials: how tightly packed atoms are
- nanoparticles: many biomolecules
What are emergent properties and what causes them ?
When atoms interact to form larger molecules, they show new behaviors they didn’t show before
