What does Iron do?
Help make Red blood cells
What does Zinc do?
Helps to heal wounds
What does Vitamin A do?
Found in cheese, eggs and oily fish, Vitamin A fights infection, better vision and keeps skin healthy.
What is Starch found in and what is it needed for?
-Starch is found in Carbohydrates, Pasta, Bread and Potatoes
-Starch is needed for long term energy supply/storage
What Solution do you use for testing Starch and describe what colours would show if Starch were present and not present?
-Testing for Starch- Iodine Solution
If Starch is present, the Iodine turns from Orange/Brown to Blue/Black.
What is Glucose found in and what is it needed for?
-Glucose is found in sweets, sugar, cakes and fruits
-Glucose is needed for energy supply for respiration
What Solution do you use for testing Glucose and describe what colours would show if Glucose were present and not present?
-Benedict’s Solution to test for Glucose
-Once heated to above 60°C, if the Benedict’s Reagent turns from Blue to Brick Red if there is Glucose present
-If there is only a little present, it will turn pale green
What Solution do you use for testing Protein and describe what colours would show if Protein were present and not present?
-Biuret Solution to test for Protein
-If Protein present, the solution will turn from Blue to Lilac.
What is Protein found in and what is it needed for?
-Protein is found in Meats, Beans, Eggs + Fish
-Protein is needed for growth of cells and tissue repair
What is Fat found in and what is it needed for?
-Fat is found in Dairy- eg, butter, cheese, animal fat
-Fat is needed for insulation + another long-term energy supply
What Solution do you use for testing Fat and describe what colours would show is Fat were present and not present?
-Ethanol (+water) for testing fats
-If Lipids are present, the solution should turn from clear, to milky white.
There is no food test for fibre but fibre is needed to…

Precaution- No naked flames around Ethanol
