What are the blood types that humans can have
Type-A = Antigen A
Type-B = Antigen B
Type-AB = Antigens A and B
Type-O = NO antigens
What is the Rhesus factor (Rh) found in blood types
Positive blood = Rh antigen
Negative blood = NO Rh antigen
Define antigens
Antigens are present on the surface of each red blood cell.
Antigens are like an ID tag that tell us what the blood type is
Besides finding antigens on the surface of each red blood cell where else can you find them
They can also be found on the surface of bacteria and viruses.
Antigens are detected by
antibodies.
Define Antibodies
Antibodies are like
security officers.
They are checking each
antigen to ensure they are not an invader.
What would happen if an antibody detects an unknown antigen
they will trigger an immune response.
Why is blood compatibility important
Blood transfusions need to be handled with care
if the recipient of the transfusion receives the wrong blood-type antibodies will trigger an immune response. Causing the blood to form clumps
how does blood typing in a lab work
Blood sample gets taken, then the blood is mixed with A, B and Rh antibodies, they check for any agglutination (clumps), then the results come and you know what the blood type is
