1
Q

Photosynthesis formula

A

6CO2 + 6H2O - (chlorophyll + sunlight)> C6H12O6 + 6O2

Q

Rubisco

A
  • Catalyst in the first step of photosynthesis
  • Binds Carbon Dioxide and attaches it to a sugar molecule

Q

C3 Plants

A
  • No adaptations to limit
    photorespiration
  • Carbon dioxide is fixed directly from
    the air.
  • C3 plants are at a disadvantage when
the weather is hot and dry as Rubisco
will be picking up more oxygen.

Q

C4 Plants

A
  • Carbon is fixed in the mesophyll and
The Calvin cycle is completed in a
    different cell (bundle sheath).
  • The initial carbon fixation and the rest
    of the light-independent reaction are
    separated over space.
  • Mesophyll cells constantly pump CO2
into the bundle sheath cells keeping
    the concentration high and lowering
the chance Rubisco will pick up O2
instead. But this costs additional ATP.
  • C4 plants can maintain high rates of
    photosynthesis and low rates of
    photorespiration at high
    temperatures.
