bio test Flashcards
(27 cards)
Explain the difference between bioaccumulation and biomagnification.
Bio accumulation is the build up of a chemical in an organism over time meanwhile biomagnification is the concept that the chemical increases in quantity from organism to organism as they eat more organisms that have already consumer other organisms containing the contaminant.
Biomagnification occurs across tropich levels meanwhile bioaccumalation is a single organisms
What is land pollution?
The degradation of earths surface through the misuse of land resources and waste not disposed of properly.
What are some causes of land pollution?
Deforestation ***
Pesticides
Mining
Landfills
Sewage
Construction
Dumping of radioactive wastes
Heavy metals in soil
Literring kills animals
What are some effects of Land pollution?
Contamination of soil
Loss of fertile land for agriculture
Harm to wildlife
Spread of disease
List a few solutions for land pollution?
Reduce, reuse and recycle
Sustainable agricultural practices
Reforestation
Cleaning up of contaminated sites
What is water pollution?
Water pollution is th echemical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effec ton any living thing
What are some causes for water pollution?
Industrial discharge
Sewage and wastewater
Agricultural runoff
Oil spills
Littering and dumping
What are some effects of water polllution?
Harm aquatic life
Contamination of drinking water
Spread of waterborn diseases
Eutrophication ***
Damage to ecosystems
Economic losses
List a few solutions for water pollution
Waste water treatment
Stricter regulations
Sustainable agricultural practices
Oil spill prevention
Proper waste disposal
Protecting water resources
Define eutrophication
Excessive growth of algae where when it dies the algaes bacteria decomposes the oxygen dissolved in the water and kills th efish
What is air pollution?
Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals or microorganisms into atmosphere at concetrations high enough to harm living things
What are some causes of air pollution
Burning of fossil fuels
Industrial emissions
Vehicle exhaust
Agricultural activities
Natural events (volcanic fires, wildfires)
Effects of air pollution
Respiratory disease
Cardiovascular problems
Acid rain
Smog
Global warming and climate change
Damage to plants and animals
List a few solutions of air pollution.
Use of renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydro)
Improved vehicle emissions standards
Public transportation and carpooling
Energy-efficient appliances
Stricter industrial regulations
Planting trees
Smog -
Smoke and fog caused by Industrial plants, automobiles, heating and creates issues like blocking out sunlight and causing respriatory issues
Ozone depletion -
The Ozone layer stops harmful UV rays from reaching earth meanwhile ozone damaging chemicals are depleting the Ozone layer and causing an increase in UV rays harmful to life
Greenhouse gases -
CO2, H20 Vapor and methane
Greenhouse effect -
traps heat on earth caused by burning of fossil fuels, farm animals releasing methane, cutting down forests absorbing CO2, landfills releasing emthan, cars releasing CO2
acid rain -
Caused by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide pollution from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil.
Streams and lakes become more acidic, killing fish, frogs and other life.
Damage forests and plants and deteriorates buildings
What are some examples of finite resources?
Fossil fuels, minerals and metals
Explain the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources.
Renewable cna be recycled or reuse meanwhile nonrenewable are finite nad cant
Trade-off -
solution has both negativ ena positive impacts
Deforestation -
removal of tress form a forest ecosystem
Direct harvesting -
loss of rainfores tin its biodiversity
