7
Q

what is osmosis

A

the movement of fluid, usually water, across a membrane toward an are of high solute concentration (type of diffusion)

8
Q

when will diffusion/osmosis go wrong

A

if the cell is to large as both take time and without them the cell cannot function

Q

explain cell division for growth

A
  • we start as one individual cell, as multicellular organisms grow the #of cells increase
  • cells recicve/loose nutrients through diffusion
  • diffusion/osmosis take place

Q

explain cell division for repair

A
  • daily you shed millions of skin cells that are replaced quickly (cells divide to heal)
  • body replaces red blood cells every two days
-ALL organisms need to repair themselves to survive

Q

explain cell divison for reproduction

A

asexual: mitosis
- parent cell divides into two daughter cells, each daughter cell has complete set of genetic info identical to its parents, occurs in both single and mutilcullar organsisms

sexual: meiosis
- parents cell divides into two gamete cells, each cell has half of a complete set of genetic info from its parents, two gamete cells (each from unique parent cell) combine to form a new organism, occurs in most mutlicellular organisms

13
Q

what is the difference between asexual and sexual reproduction

A

asexual: uniparental, gametes not formed, no fertalization occurs

sexual: bi-parental, gametes are formed, fertalization takes place
