biodiversity Flashcards
(23 cards)
define biodiversity
a measure of the variation found in the living world
define habitat
the place where an organism lives
define species
a group of organisms that can freely interbreed to produce fertile offspring
define population
all the organisms of the same species , who live in the same place , at the same time , who can breed together
define community
all of the populations of different species , who live in the same place , at the same time , who can interact with each other
define niche
the role of an organism within its habitat
what would a low biodiversity area look like compared to a high biodiversity area ?
- a low biodiversity area is not got much ,very free species
- a high biodiversity , full of coral , species and variety
what is biodiversity about ?
- the structural and functional variety
what is a habitat biodiversity ?
- a range of habitats in which different species live
what are the common habitats found within the UK ?
- sand dunes , woodland , meadows and streams
what will each habitat be occupied by ?
- a range of organisms
what are the 3 levels of biodiversity ?
habitat biodiversity
species biodiversity
genetic biodiversity
what does species consist of ?
- individual organisms that are very similar in appearance , anatomy , physiology , biochemistry and genetics
what is species diversity ?
a measure of the number of different species in an area and the relative abundance of each species
what is species richness ?
the number of different species in area
what is species evenness ?
the relative abundance of each species
describe/draw how one area may have the same richness but different species evenness
find on powerpoint
what is genetic biodiversity ?
- the variation in alleles between individuals of the same species
what happens if genetic diversity is reduced ?
- the species has less capacity to adapt to a changing environment through evolution
what is the difference between genetic diversity and variation ?
- variation is expected ( as a result of sexual reproduction ) and can’t be measured
what does variation ensure ?
- we don’t all look identical
what can genetic variation create ?
- breeds within a species
