what affects biodiversity ? Flashcards
(12 cards)
1
Q
what are 3 factors that affect biodiversity ?
A
- human population growth
- increased use of monoculture in agriculture
- climate change
2
Q
what is declining as a result of human activities ?
A
- the number of species
- the genetic diversity of many species
3
Q
what happens as a result of human population growth ?
A
- the demand for more food and consumer goods
–> which has a greater and greater effect upon other species
4
Q
what are 5 things that happens as a result of human population growth ?
A
- we have learned to use the environment to our advantage
- we alter ecosystems to provide ourselves with food
-we destroy and fragment habitats - we are using more and more of the Earth’s resources
- we pollute the atmosphere
5
Q
how do humans harm species ?
A
- directly or indirectly and this can lead to extinction
6
Q
what is the expected population by 2050 ?
A
8.3 and 10.9 million
7
Q
what does habitat loss cause ?
A
- deforestation
8
Q
what does overexploitation cause ?
A
- resources being used up faster than can be replenished
e.g. some fish species being overfished
9
Q
what does urbanisation cause ?
A
- populations are unable to breed as they are isolated from each other
10
Q
what does pollution cause ?
A
- high levels of fertiliser flow into a river decreases fish populations
11
Q
what does agriculture have a huge effect on ?
A
the biodiversity of natural habitats
