Biodiversity & Conservation Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are 3 types of Biodiversity?
genetic, species, and ecosystem diversity
Why is biodiversity important?
Humans depend on biodiversity for clothes, food, medication, and for other stuff.
What are the indirect values of biodiversity?
Green plants, aesthetic value, and natural processes that provide drinking water.
Direct Values of biodiversity
Plants, medicine, animals/plants that have a desirable genetic trait.
What are the threats to biodiversity?
overexploitation, habitat loss, fragmentation of habitat, and pollution.
How is the current extinction rate different from the back round extinction rate?
More animals are becoming extinct.
How can the decline of a single species affect an entire ecosystem?
If you take too much of a species from its ecosystem it becomes too depleted to recover then the whole ecosystem can collapse.
Overexploitation
excessive use, of species that have economic value.
Biological Magnification
increasing concentration of toxic substances in organisms as trophic levels increase in a food chain or food web.
What are the two classes of natural resources?
renewable and non-renewable
What are the methods used to conserve biodiversity?
Corridors and sustainable use.
What are two techniques used to restore biodiversity?
bioremediation and biological augmentation
Endemic
species are only found in one specific geographic location.
