Homeostasis, Cell Struc. & Function Flashcards
(14 cards)
Homeostasis
A process that living things use to stay in good health for necessary survival.
Two Examples
Plants, people
How to find total magnification
multiply the ocular lens and the objective lens.
Describe Eukaryotic Cells
Larger, more complex, contains a nucleus and other organelles.
Describe Prokaryotic Cells
Smaller, simpler, and does not contain a nucleus or other membrane bound organelles.
What are the 3 main things in the plasma membrane?
Proteins, cholesterols, and carbohydrates.
What are the roles of proteins?
Receptors, Support, and Transport.
What is the purpose of cholesterols?
Prevents fatty acid tails in the phospholipid bilayer from sticking to each other, and contributes to the fluidity of the mebrane.
What are Glycoproteins and Glycolipids?
Carbohydrates attached to proteins or lipids.
What is dependent on the plasma membrane structure?
Control how, when, and how much substances can enter and leave a cell.
3 principles of the cell theory
All living organisms are composed of one of more cells.
Cells are the basic unit of structure and organization of all living organisms.
Cells arise only from previously existing cells, with cells passing copies of their genetic material on to their daughter cells.
What is the function of Plasma membrane
Uses Selective Permeability , only allowing certain substances to pass and keeping others out.
Structure of plasma membrane
Has phospholipid bilayer
cell theory
one of the fundamental ideas of modern biology
