Biodiversity & Ecosystems Flashcards
(13 cards)
LIST the different types of pollution
land, air, water & deforestation
GIVE the environmental effects of land pollution
disease transmission from rodents
Agricultural chemicals washing into water systems
GIVE the environmental effects of air pollution
Acid rain, smog, global dimming
global warming, rising sea levels
GIVE the environmental effects of deforestation
Habitat destruction
Destroys wildlife
Increases carbon monoxide levels
LIST the ways biodiversity can be maintained
breeding programmes
protection and regeneration of rare habitats
reducing deforestation and carbon emissions
describe the greenhouse gas effect
Greenhouse gases allow short wavelength EM radiation( e.g UV light) to pass through from the sun to the earth.
Energy is absorbed by the Eath’s surface and re-emitted at longer wavelengths (eg IR)
Some is absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
This traps the energy and increases the temperature of the air
Give the effect of global warming
Loss of habitat
Reduced biodiversity
Changes in species migration patterns
Changes in species distributions
What is quarrying
obtaining materials from the ground such as metal ores, salts, coal & stone
GIVE examples of decomposers
fungi and bacteria
define Anthropogenic
caused by human
What does algae do to water
makes it antitoxic
what is Bioaccumilation
when toxins build up in food chain. THE APEX PREDITOR IS MOST AFFECTED BY THIS!
List the stages of eutrophication
1 Excess fertiliser ( eg nitrogen and phosphate) dissolves water into soil
2 Fertiliser run off causes algae and other plants to grow
3 Algae quickly covers the surface of the lake, this prevents light from reaching the plants lower in the water
4Oxygen is used up by decaying bacteria. the water now is ANOXIC
5Plants & algae die and are broken down by microorganisms in the water
