Bioenergetics Flashcards
(33 cards)
what is photosynthesis
a process in which plants produce their own food
what is the symbol equation for photosynthesis
co2 + H2O —.> c6h12o6 + o2
what are the reactants of photosynthesis
carbon dioxide and water
what are the products of photosynthesis
oxygen and glucose
where in the plant does photosynthesis occur
in chloroplasts in green plants
what does chloroplast contain
chlorophyll
what is chlorophyll and what does it do
it is a green pigment which absorbs in sunlight
what type of reaction is photosynthesis and why
endothermic because it absorbs energy from its surrounding
what 5 ways do plants use glucose for
Cellulose
Amino acids
Respiration
Lipids
Starch
CARLS - CELLULOSE
glucose is converted into cellulose to produce strong, supportive cell walls enabling them to grow
CARLS - AMINO ACIDS
glucose combined with nitrate ions from the soil make proteins
why is protein an essential nutrient in plants
it makes vital substances like DNA and enzymes which are essential for growth
CARLS- RESPIRATION
used to transfer energy
CARLS - LIPIDS
glucose can be broken down into lipids which are then found within seeds
CARLS - STARCH
if glucose is not needed it can be converted into starch which is used when there is little sunlight so respiration can still occur
where is starch stored in plants
stem, roots, leaves and seeds
what are the limiting factors which can affect the rate of photosynthesis
intensity of light
concentration of co2
temperature
what happens when these limiting factors are present
it stops photosynthesis from happening faster
what is the limiting factor at night time and hwy
light intensity is because there is not enough light
what is the limiting factor in winter and why
temperature is because it is cold
when can co2 be limiting
when there is bright sunlight
when stomata close
in crowded areas
in controlled environments
why is co2 limiting when there is bright sunlight
because plants use more co2 in bright sunlight
why is co2 limiting when stomata close
in dry conditions, stomata closes to save up water, this reduces co2 intake
why is co2 limiting in crowded areas
when there is a a lot of plants there will be less co2 available for each plant
