What is bioethics?
Right vs right, ethical and moral implications
What is nursing ethics?
Branch of applied ethics, shares many principles with medical ethics like beneficence, non maleficence and respect for autonomy
What are ethical principles?
Fundamentally accepted, not always socially accepted, important underlying law or assumption required in a system of thought
What are the 4 ethical principles?
- Autonomy
- Beneficence
- Non maleficence
- Justice
What is autonomy?
Making choices for yourself, patients have the right to make choices for themselves
What is beneficence?
Do what’s best for the patient at all times, doing everything to benefit the patient
What is non-maleficence?
To do no harm, you must consider whether other people of society could be harmed by a decision being made
What is justice?
Fairness in all medical decisions, equal distribution of scarce equipment or medicines, uphold applicable laws and legislation
What are some principle conflicts?
Autonomy vs beneficence ex. Blood/ religion Beneficence vs non maleficence ex. Immunizations Justice vs autonomy ex. Violent client Autonomy vs paternalism Surgery pain Beneficence/ non maleficence vs privacy confidentiality ex. Telling a family diagnosis
