Define the study of ethics
Human behaviour as consequences or beliefs on what is right, wrong, bad and good
Define legal ethics
Set of rules you have to follow in your workplace or laws in society or face consequences
Why do nurses need to be ethical?
Nurses are taking care of vulnerable people and they are responsible for them
Why do we study ethics?
Most of society don’t follow ethical decisions, they follow a crowd, nurses always must follow the ethical crowd
Define values
Personal beliefs about the worth of an object, idea, a custom or an attitude, values influence decisions, an individual will adopt a value system that someone feels is right or wrong, this can come from experiences, society or peers
What are the 3 types of values? Define them
- Personal: personal beliefs (guided by family, friends, culture or religious backgrounds)
- Professional: work place values you must follow
- Institutional: your facility’s values that you must follow
Define dignity
Being honest, trustworthy, sincere and respectful toward your patients, communicated through active listening, showing understanding and respect
Define excellence
Striving for the best
Responsibility
And always continuing to improve
Define fair/justice
Tearing people with mutual respect, everybody has different needs, remember equity over equality
What does CARE stand for?
Communication: among all health care professionals at work
Accountability: responsible for your actions
Respect: treating everyone with respect
Excellence: being a leader and always wanting to do better
What is value clarification?
The process of self evaluation that helps a person gain insight into individual values
What are morals?
Rules that society itself has established and follows, often morals become laws, principles are based on a persons values “treat others the way you want to be treated
What are norms?
Standards of proper or acceptable behaviour
