Biological Molecules and Supplementary Information Flashcards
(10 cards)
Why are functional groups important?
Because each functional group imparts specific chemical properties
What are macromolecules?
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleus acids
What does ‘monosaccharides’ mean?
Single ‘simple’ sugars
What are disaccharides?
Double sugars that consists of two monosaccharides, which are joined dehydration synthesis
What is dehydration synthesis?
Condensation reaction
What are polysaccharides?
Chains of monosaccharides; they consist many monomer sugars
What is Chitin?
The exoskeleton and surgical thread that are found on the outside surface of various insects
What are the functions of Carbohydrates?
- Energy source
- Energy storage
- Structural support
- Transport energy source
- Cell surface signals, immune response, cell-cell recognition
What are Trans Fats?
Partially hydrogenated oils; triglycerides, naturally unsaturated fatty acid tails have been chemically altered to be more saturated by adding Hydrogen atoms
Why are Trans Fats unhealthy?
They are associated with:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Reduction of membrane integrity
- Free radical damage
