biological molecules pt 2 Flashcards
(10 cards)
what are enzymes?
enzymes are special proteins that act as catalyst in your body, which means they speed up chemical reactions without being used up themselves
what temperature do enzymes work best at in the human body?
optimum enzyme activity is at 37 degrees.
what is the structure of and enzyme molecule?
enzymes are proteins made up of long chains of amino acids
these long chains fold to produce a 3d shape.
what is the enzymes process?
1)substrate enter active site
2)an enzyme-substrate complex forms
3)reaction occurs
4)products form and leave active site
what will happen when enzymes are at low temperatures and high temperatures?
there will be insufficient activation at low temp
the enzyme is denatured: its 3d shape has changed at high temperatures
what is the optimum pH level for enzymes?
optimum pH level for enzymes is at pH level 7
what is an active site?
a specific area of enzyme that is shaped to allow other molecules to fit into it to undergo reaction. Most vital part of enzyme function
what is a substrate?
the molecule that fits into the active site to undergo reaction.
what is the enzyme-substrate complex?
the structure formed when the substrate and enzyme bind together for the reaction.
what is the product?
what is formed after the reaction
