Biology Flashcards
(37 cards)
What are the different levels within ecosystems?
Organism → Population → Community → Ecosystem → Landscape → Biosphere
What are biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem?
Biotic = living organisms; Abiotic = non-living factors like sunlight, water, temperature
What is DDT and what effects did it have?
A synthetic pesticide that caused environmental harm, especially to birds of prey
Who wrote Silent Spring and what was its impact?
Rachel Carson; it raised awareness of pesticide dangers and started the environmental movement
What abiotic factors influence life in the biosphere?
Sunlight, temperature, water, nutrients, and wind
What adaptations help pronghorns survive in plains/deserts?
Speed, efficient oxygen use, keen vision, and endurance
How does solar energy and Earth’s movement affect climate?
They influence heat distribution and global climate patterns
How do landforms affect local climate?
Mountains alter rainfall and temperature; valleys trap air
Why do different seasons occur?
Earth’s axial tilt and orbit cause seasonal changes; hemispheres experience opposite seasons
Why do prevailing winds and ocean currents exist?
Caused by Earth’s rotation and uneven solar heating
What are ocean zones/realms?
Pelagic (open water), Benthic (sea floor), Photic (light), Aphotic (dark), Intertidal (shore)
What are freshwater biomes?
Lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, wetlands
What are the nine major terrestrial biomes?
Tropical forest, savanna, desert, chaparral, temperate grassland, broadleaf forest, coniferous forest, tundra, polar ice
Why do distant biomes have similar species traits?
Convergent evolution from similar environments
What links all parts of the biosphere?
Energy flow and nutrient cycling
What is behavior and its causes?
Behavior is an action; proximate = immediate, ultimate = evolutionary cause
What is a fixed action pattern (FAP)?
A hardwired, unchangeable behavior (e.g., goose retrieving egg)
How do genes and environment shape behavior?
Behavior is influenced by both genetics and environment
What are the types of learning?
Habituation, imprinting, spatial learning, associative learning, social learning, problem solving
What is the optimal foraging model?
Maximizes energy gain with least effort
What is a signal in animal behavior?
A stimulus meant to influence another organism’s behavior
What is the waggle dance?
Bee movement indicating food location
What are the three mating systems?
Promiscuous, monogamous, polygamous
What is agonistic behavior?
Conflict behavior over resources
