Biology Flashcards
(30 cards)
List the two types of cells
Eukaryotic and prokaryotic
Define eukaryotic cells
Complex cells with a nucleus and many organelles such as the mitochondria.
Define prokaryotic cells
Simple cells with genetics in the cytoplasm.
What are the 3 statements of cell theory?
All living things are made of cells. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function. All cells come from pre-existing cells.
List the characteristics of life
Nutrition, respiration, growth, excretion, homeostasis, movement, reproduction.
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus acts like the brain of the cell. It holds the DNA and tells the cell what to do.
What is the function of the nuclear membrane?
The nuclear membrane protects the nucleus and controls what goes in and out of it.
What is the function of the ribosome?
Ribosomes make proteins by reading instructions from the DNA.
What is the function of the vacuole?
The vacuole stores things like water, nutrients, and waste. It helps keep the cell clean and organized.
What is the function of lysosomes?
Lysosomes break down and recycle old or damaged cell parts and waste, like a cleanup crew.
What is the function of the nucleoli?
The nucleoli are where ribosomes are made inside the nucleus.
What is the function of mitochondria?
Mitochondria turn food into energy the cell can use—like tiny power plants.
What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
The smooth ER helps make fats (lipids) and moves them around the cell.
What is the function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
The rough ER makes and modifies proteins, with help from the ribosomes on its surface.
What is the function of the Golgi complex?
The Golgi complex packages and ships proteins and other materials to where they’re needed.
What is the function of microtubules?
Microtubules give the cell its shape and help move things inside the cell.
What is the function of centrioles?
Centrioles help organize the cell’s skeleton during cell division.
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
The cytoplasm fills the cell and helps keep the organelles in place. It’s where many cell activities happen.
What is the function of microvilli?
Microvilli increase the cell’s surface area so it can absorb more nutrients or substances.
What is the function of the plasma/cell membrane?
The cell membrane acts like a gatekeeper, controlling what comes in and out of the cell.
What is the function and location of ciliated cells?
Ciliated cells move substances using tiny hair-like structures called cilia. They are found in the respiratory tract (to clear mucus) and in the reproductive system.
What is the function and location of root hair cells?
Root hair cells absorb water and nutrients from soil by increasing surface area. They are found on the roots of plants.
What is the function and location of red blood cells (erythrocytes)?
Red blood cells transport oxygen to the body and carry carbon dioxide to the lungs. They are found in the bloodstream.
What is the function and location of sperm cells?
Sperm cells fertilize the female egg. They are produced in the male reproductive system (testes).
