Biology evolution unit test Flashcards
(13 cards)
how are finches evidence of natural selection
Becuase there finches that survived were the fittest to there environment, which lead to new finches that are best suited for the environment they live in
What is Natural selection. Give example
The survive of the fittest, example (giraffes evolved the have long necks because it was the only way they could eat there food
what did Darwin discover on his trip
Species vary globally, species vary locally and species vary over time
what is evolution
Evolution is the population of organisms change over many generations
what is microevolution and macroevolution
Micro evolution is the result of small changes over time in species (example) beak shapes or colour of animals
name and explain the evidence of evolution and explain them
The fossil record, geographic distribution, comparative anatomy, comparative development and molecular biology
what is stabilizing selection
When both extremes are selected against example, plants are usually medium height so they receive equal water and sunlight
what is disruptive selection
When the mean is selected against example (different coloured animals don’t blend into rocks, plants and die from predators)
what is directional selection
When only one extreme is selected against, example (giraffes long necks)
Name and describe the Mechanisms of Evolution
Mutations, natural selection, sexual selection, genetic drift, gene flow
Artificial Selection
When humans breed to organisms together to create a new species with certain purposeful traits (example) dogs
what’s Convergent Evolution and Adaptive Radiation
Convergent- distantly related species that live in similar environments develop similar adaptions
Adaptive- evolution form a common ancestor that results in diverse species
