Biology Final Test Flashcards
(42 cards)
What is the difference between biotic and abiotic factors?
An abiotic factors is a non living factor such as rock where as a biotic factor is a living factor such as animals and plants
How do biotic and abiotic factors contribute to the ecosystems?
They depend on each other t keep a healthy ecosystem
What are the 3 spheres?
Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, and Atmosphere
What is the difference between the 3 spheres?
Lithosphere is anything rock or solid. Hydrosphere is anything underwater. Atmosphere is anything in the air.
How does each of the 3 spheres contribute to the functionality of the ecosystem?
Lithosphere - Foundations for land, creates area for necessary growth (food)
Hydrosphere - Living habitat for marine life, food for plants
Atmosphere - Oxygen to breathe, moisture for rain, nitrogen fro plants, gases separating earth from space, regulates climate
What is a food web?
A food web is a list of how the superiority of animals, insects, and plants in an ecosystems exist relating multiple animals to one producer.
What is a food chain?
A simple representation of which animals, insects, and plants live with others.
What is a herbivore?
A creature that only eats plants
What is a omnivore?
A creature that eats both meats and plants
What is a carnivore?
A creature that eats only meats
What is a scavenger?
An organism that mostly consumes decaying biomass, such as meat or rotting plant material.
What is a decomposer?
An organism that breaks down the waste in an ecosystem to gain nutrients and recycle nutrients for the rest of the ecosystem eg. Microorganism (bacteria)
What is a producer?
An organism that meets its energy needs by making its own food eg. Algae
What is a consumer?
An organism that relies on plants for its energy
What is a population?
A group of animals/people in a specific area
What is a niche?
The role or function of a given organism within its ecosystem.
What is a habitat?
The shelter/home of where animals live
What is an ecosystem?
a community of interacting organisms and their non-living environment
What is a predator?
An animal at the top of a food web, with few, or no natural enemies
What is a prey?
An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food.
What is a trophic level?
The position that an organism occupies in a food chain.
What is carrying capacity?
the maximum number of organisms that an environment can support due to limited resources
How does energy get passed on through a food chain?
through consumption 10% of the energy consumed gets passed on
What is the carbon cycle?
Carbon enters the biotic components of an ecosystem through photosynthesis. Plants use CO2 to form carbohydrates/ glucose. Cellular respiration in consumers releases carbon into the environment
