Biology- How Substances Enter And Leave Cells Flashcards
Define the cell membrane
Semi-permeable any substance entering or leaving must pass through hear
Define the cellulose cell wall
The plant cell wall is composed of cellulose. Cellulose is a structural carbohydrate and is considered a complex sugar because it is used in both protection and structure
Define diffusion
The tendency of molecules to move from an area of lower concentration
E.g. Animal- exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen between the alveoli in the lungs and blood
E.g. Plants- carbon dioxide enters stomata and oxygen leaves
Define osmosis
Movement of water from regions of high water concentration through a semi permeable membrane.
Define and solute solution
Substances being dissolved in a liquid
Define solvent solution
Substance doing the dissolving
What does a hypertonic solution do to a cell?
A hypertonic solution causes a cell to shrink because of osmosis (water leaves the cell)
What does a hypotonic solution do to a cell
A hypotonic solution causes a cell to swell because of osmosis (water entered the cell)
What does an isotonic solution do to a cell
Isotonic solution doesn’t effect a cell
