Biology P1 - Bioenergetics Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water —light—> glucose + oxygen
What is the balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O —–> C6H12O6 + 6O2
Is photosynthesis endothermic or exothermic?
Endothermic
What are some limiting factors for photosynthesis?
- temperature
- carbon dioxide concentration
- light intensity
- chlorophyll concentration
What is glucose used for in a plant?
Respiration
What can glucose be changed into in a plant?
- insoluble starch, stored in the stem, leaves or roots
- fat or oil, which is also stored
- cellulose, to strengthen cell walls
- proteins, which are used for growth and for enzymes
What do plants need, in addition to glucose, to make proteins?
Nitrate ions from the soil
What is the inverse square law?
Doubling the distance between the lamp and pondweed will reduce the light intensity by a quarter
What absorbs the energy required for photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll
What is role of chlorophyll?
To absorb light energy for photosynthesis
Why may plants produce insufficient chlorophyll?
- They lack the required nutrients
- They have a disease like Tobacco Mosaic Virus
2 ways the cells use the energy from respiration
- Move substances around the body
- Contract muscles
- Maintain body temperature
What is glucose converted to in animals
Lactic acid
